Executive Director, Progenitor & Promoter — Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd.

Every institution of enduring consequence is, in its marrow, the lengthened shadow of its people. At Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd., one individual has stood at the forefront of that collective endeavour — Amit Choudhary.

Since 1994, he has been the galvanising nucleus around which Himadri’s entire operational philosophy, manufacturing culture, and institutional character have crystallised. He conceived the system from the ground up. He originated every process — then drove each one forward with hands-on command. He defined the foundational grammar of how a plant is commissioned. He authored the exacting protocols that govern safety on the shop floor. He shaped the talent doctrines that attract and retain Himadri’s finest minds. He built the sustainability frameworks that have placed the company in the uppermost echelon of global ESG performance.

Each of these bears the unmistakable imprint of one man’s vision, tenacity, and hands-on command — because he put it there.

A Progenitor, Promoter, and Executive Director of Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd., Amit Choudhary is a Commerce graduate from the illustrious St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata — further honed by advanced management pedagogy at IESE Business School, Spain, an institution of preeminent global stature in executive leadership.

Yet it is not his credentials that define him.

It is what he has built, and the manner in which he has built it, that speaks with incontrovertible authority.

Philosophy, Doctrine & the Operating Mind

Within Himadri, Amit Choudhary stands as the doctrinal wellspring from which the company’s entire operating ethos flows.

His axiom is absolute: scale demands systems, and growth demands culture.

This is a principle he embodies in full, transmitting it personally, enforcing it directly, and living it at every level of the organisation. From boardroom strategy sessions to factory-floor interventions, from mentoring young engineers on process discipline to personally troubleshooting bottlenecks during critical commissioning phases, he is simultaneously the strategist and the soldier, the philosopher and the practitioner.

Here he is, conceiving the system from the ground up. Commissioning plants through the foundational grammar he himself defined. Originating every process, then driving it forward with hands-on command. He writes the exacting protocols that govern safety on the shop floor. He shapes the talent doctrines that attract and retain Himadri’s finest minds. He builds the sustainability frameworks that have placed the company in the uppermost echelon of global ESG performance.

Every pillar of this institution bears the unmistakable imprint of one man’s vision and tenacity, because he put it there.

Three Decades. One Vision. Extraordinary Magnitude.

Over three decades, under his direct orchestration, Himadri has undergone a metamorphosis of extraordinary magnitude — from a single-product coal tar pitch manufacturer in West Bengal into a globally venerated speciality chemicals conglomerate.

With manufacturing dominions spanning multiple states, an export footprint encompassing 56 nations, and a diversified portfolio that traverses coal tar pitch, carbon black, and naphthalene derivatives through to lithium-ion battery materials, speciality oils, construction chemicals, and tyres.

None of this happened by institutional momentum. It happened because one person refused to accept the ordinary.

Himadri Facility

The Mentor, the Role Model, the Standard-Bearer

At Himadri, culture does not cascade from policy documents. It cascades from Amit Choudhary.

He has single-handedly forged the PeopleFirst philosophy that now defines Himadri’s organisational identity — a conviction that an industrial enterprise is only as formidable as the human beings who operate it, and that investing in people is an act of strategic primacy. Under his personal mentorship, this philosophy has permeated every stratum of the organisation — from the C-suite to the shop floor, from the R&D laboratories to the logistics corridors.

He is the teacher that senior leaders seek out when navigating complexity. He is the role model that young professionals aspire to emulate. He is the standard-bearer whose personal conduct — his punctuality, his rigour, his refusal to accept mediocrity, his willingness to descend into operational detail when the situation demands — has set the behavioural template for what it means to be a Himadri leader.

The outcomes of this personal influence carry the weight of the most exacting independent validation:

  • Great Place to Work® Certification — Himadri stands among a select cohort of Indian manufacturing companies recognised for workplace culture and employee engagement. This happened because one individual insisted, year after year, that people must come first — and built the systems to ensure they do.
  • Golden Peacock Award for HR Excellence (2024) — conferred by the Institute of Directors (IOD), India. A recognition not of HR policy alone, but of the culture-building, talent cultivation, and mentorship ecosystem that Amit has personally formulated and nurtured across the group.

Recognition at the Summit of Global Standards

  • Golden Peacock Award for Occupational Health & Safety (2025) — bestowed by the IOD in successive commendation, following a rigorous tripartite assessment. Himadri emerged from 573 nominations and eclipsed the 80% threshold requisite for this distinction. Safety at Himadri is a personal non-negotiable — instituted, enforced, and held to the highest standard by Amit himself.

  • EcoVadis Platinum Medal — conferred for two consecutive years, placing Himadri within the uppermost 1% of over 130,000 organisations globally evaluated on Environment, Social, and Governance parameters.

  • ISCC PLUS Certification — secured by the flagship Mahistikry plant, attesting to conformity with the most exacting global benchmarks for ecological stewardship, social accountability, greenhouse gas abatement, ecosystem preservation, and raw material provenance.

Every one of these accolades traces its provenance directly to the standards, systems, and culture that Amit Choudhary personally initiated and relentlessly champions — holding each one to full strength, always.

The Troubleshooter & Executor: Where Strategy Meets the Ground

Himadri’s boardroom carries strategic ambition of the highest order. And Himadri builds every one of those ambitions on time, to specification, and at scale.

The reason is Amit Choudhary.
He is the company’s ultimate executor and its foremost troubleshooter. Every major capacity expansion, every new product vertical, every mission-critical commissioning carries his fingerprints, as the operative who defines the execution blueprint, anticipates the failure points, and intervenes personally when the stakes are highest.

He inhabits every problem personally by staying with it, working it, until it yields. This is precisely why Himadri’s plants have been delivered consistently ahead of schedule and to state-of-the-art standards. This is why the company’s operational performance has compounded with metronomic regularity, quarter upon quarter, across commodity vicissitudes and demand oscillations. The discipline is his personal doctrine, disseminated across an entire organisation until it became the institutional reflex.

Domains of Mastery

Operational Preeminence & Manufacturing Standards

Amit has inculcated world-class process rigour, yield optimisation, and cost ascendancy across every one of Himadri’s manufacturing facilities. The relentless amelioration in quality, safety, and environmental performance, authenticated by global certifications and sovereign independent ratings is a direct reflection of his personal insistence: the bar must always be external, always global, always rising.

Multisite Capacity Materialisation

Every greenfield and brownfield expansion across Himadri’s business verticals starting from site adjudication and technology deployment to production inauguration and volumetric ramp- up has been spearheaded by Amit. He delivers facilities ahead of stipulated timelines as a matter of method through a methodology he personally designed and a standard of execution he personally enforces.

Organisational Profundity & Talent Architecture

The institutional gravitas that permits Himadri to function at scale, the systematised talent cultivation, the digitalised operational workflows, the scalable governance mechanisms, the meritocratic culture that retains and galvanises high-calibre professionals across multiple sites and geographies is his creation. He built it. He mentors the people who run it. And he continuously evolves it to match the growing complexity of Himadri’s ambitions.

Supply Chain, Logistics & Global Market Penetration

Amit has fortified Himadri’s global logistics sinews by commissioning new port terminals, including the latest New Mangalore coal tar pitch export terminal, augmenting export corridors, and engineering the supply chain resilience that now serves clientele across 56 countries. When bottlenecks arise in global logistics, and they inevitably do, his intervention reconfigures the solution.

Sustainability, Circularity & Ecologically Consonant Operations

Himadri’s sustainability leadership — its 8 zero-liquid discharge facilities, its 100% proprietary clean power, its waste-to-wealth programmes — is the expression of a conviction Amit holds personally: that environmental responsibility must be woven into the operational genome of every facility, embedded as a living standard. He initiated these programmes. He resourced them. He made them non-negotiable.

Seminal Milestones: The Evidence of Execution

Mahistikry — His Magnum Opus

Look at what this man has built!

The Mahistikry complex in Hooghly, West Bengal — today a globally benchmarked, vertically integrated carbon materials ecosystem — exists because Amit Choudhary willed it into being. He conceived the expansion roadmap. He drove every successive phase of brownfield augmentation — from an inaugural carbon black capacity of 120,000 MTPA, through calibrated escalations to 180,000 MTPA, and onward to the present 250,000 MTPA, encompassing 130,000 MTPA of speciality carbon black. He was on the ground for every critical commissioning. He set the standards that every contractor, engineer, and operator was held to. Mahistikry today holds the unequivocal distinction of being the world’s largest single-location speciality carbon black manufacturing facility — a pre-eminence acknowledged across the global carbon industry. It serves high-value, performance-exacting applications across plastics, inks, paints, coatings, lithium-ion batteries, and other discerning industries, placing Himadri among the world’s five foremost carbon black producers.

The plant holds ISCC PLUS certification. It operates with zero-liquid discharge, 100% proprietary clean power, and advanced process technologies. It is a paragon — not merely of scale, but of how scale ought to be conscientiously constructed. And it stands today because one leader troubleshot every obstacle in its path and held every standard to global-best.

Battery Materials & Advanced Carbon — Pioneering India’s Energy Future And he is already building the next one

And he is already building the next one!

Amit orchestrated the operationalisation and progressive scale-up of Himadri’s speciality carbon black production for battery-grade applications. He personally supervised the evolution of lithium-ion battery material facilities from pilot experimentation to full commercial readiness — underpinning the company’s ambitious ₹4,800 crore investment roadmap for LFP cathode active material production. Phase I, at 40,000 MTPA, is advancing toward commercial inauguration at the Odisha facility. The long-term vision reaches 200,000 MTPA — enough to serve 100 GWh of lithium-ion battery production.

When this facility attains operational fruition, it will be India’s first commercial-scale LFP cathode active material plant — and among the first beyond China’s borders to function at this magnitude. Amit’s charge is to transmute this audacious aspiration into operational reality — with the same inexorable rigour that fashioned Mahistikry. He has done it before. He will do it again.

Birla Tyres — Resurrecting the Impossible

The operational resuscitation of Birla Tyres stands as perhaps the most vivid illustration of Amit Choudhary as troubleshooter and executor. Acquired through an NCLT-sanctioned resolution plan from a total admitted indebtedness of ₹1,000 crore — at an effective capital deployment of approximately ₹300 crores for an asset constellation valued at ₹3,400 crores — this was not a conventional acquisition. It was a resurrection.

Under his direct command, the Balasore plant was brought back from the dead — fortified with automation enhancements, product diversification into OTR and OHT segments, and the introduction of radial tyre manufacturing competencies. An emblematic Indian marque, long consigned to insolvency, has been rehabilitated and reconstituted as a forward-integrated platform within Himadri’s carbon value chain. Where others saw a defunct asset, Amit saw a latent industrial ecosystem waiting to be re-engineered. He personally led the turnaround — diagnosing operational failures, redesigning production workflows, rebuilding the workforce, and delivering a functioning manufacturing unit from what was, not long before, industrial wreckage.

Unwavering Operational Consistency — The Signature of Discipline

Himadri has delivered remunerative operational performance with metronomic regularity — quarter upon quarter — across commodity vicissitudes, demand oscillations, and concurrent expansion undertakings. This consistency is the product of one man’s operational doctrine — disseminated, enforced, and personally exemplified until it became the institutional pulse.

Growth at Himadri has been methodically engineered, systematically compounding, and characteristically resilient. That is Amit Choudhary’s signature.

Future-Proofing the Manufacturing Ecosystem

Amit is currently helming organisation-wide expansion and modernisation initiatives — reconditioning plants, systems, digital infrastructure, and processes to render Himadri’s entire manufacturing ecosystem commensurate with the exigencies of the next decade. This encompasses capacity augmentation across speciality carbon black, novel speciality chemicals — including forthcoming anthraquinone and carbazole facilities — and emergent energy material platforms.

The objective is the wholesale re-architecting of Himadri’s operational substructure for an enterprise venturing into altogether new industries, geographies, and magnitudes of complexity. He is, once again, the one drawing the blueprint, setting the timelines, and holding every stakeholder to account.

Thought Leadership & Industry Interlocution

Amit Choudhary is a consequential voice within India’s industrial and advanced materials landscape. He serves as Chairman of the International Advisory Committee (IAC), the organising body of the Asia Pacific Carbon Black Conference, and has been a member of its Executive Board since inception.

Established in 1993, the Asia Pacific Carbon Black Conference is the region’s pioneering industry platform, shaping discourse and direction in the global carbon black sector for over three decades. Under his leadership, the 15th edition of the biennial conference, held in Kolkata from 21 to 23 October 2024, marked a defining milestone. The event brought together over 500 delegates and global participants, making it the largest and most impactful edition to date, and setting a new benchmark in scale and industry engagement.

His intellectual engagement traverses the most portentous themes in contemporary manufacturing — operational scale-up and systems design for advanced materials fabrication; process innovation in speciality chemicals; sustainability-embedded industrial growth and clean energy transitions; digitalisation imperatives and organisational design for scalar complexity. His voice carries weight not because of his title, but because he has built the evidence that substantiates every word.

The Mandate Ahead

Himadri stands at a consequential inflection. The company is erecting India’s inaugural commercial LFP cathode plant, has established the world’s largest single-site speciality carbon black facility, resurrected an iconic tyre marque from the depths of insolvency, and is advancing into novel speciality chemicals, sophisticated anode materials — through its strategic alliance with Sicona Battery Technologies — and deeper penetration of global markets.

Every one of these undertakings demands the same qualities that have defined Himadri’s ascent thus far — an unrelenting insistence on execution excellence, an intuitive ability to diagnose and dismantle operational impediments, the capacity to inspire and mentor teams through unprecedented complexity, and the refusal to accept any outcome short of the extraordinary. Those qualities reside, as they always have, in one person.
